When it comes to sci-fi, the possibilities are endless, which is why it's one of my favorite film genres. If I want heart-pounding blockbusters, I can watch action-packed movies like The Matrix or Aliens. There are also slower, more thought-provoking pictures like Blade Runner and Ex Machina that will have me engaged and entertained. Meanwhile, movies like John Carpenter's The Thing also blend sci-fi with horror to deliver a uniquely terrifying experience. If you're a fan of the latter like I am, then you should stream this modern gem now on Roku.
No One Will Save You is an underrated sci-fi horror film directed by Whalefall filmmaker Brian Duffield. The movie stars Kaitlyn Dever as Brynn, a reclusive woman shunned by her community over the death of her friend as she fights off aliens invading her town. Though Brynn tries to leave town, she finds herself trapped by the aliens, forcing her to fight them all alone with what little resources she has.
The movie pays homage to classic alien sci-fi like Close Encounters of the Third Kind, with the invaders being the traditional grey men with big eyes and flying saucers. However, the movie distinguishes itself from other alien features by having only five words of dialogue spoken throughout the story. Despite having such little dialogue, through visuals alone, it tells a thrilling and emotional story about a woman overcoming her guilt and loneliness as she defends herself against extraordinary odds.
The movie received an 82% "Certified Fresh" rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. It also received a glowing review from horror master Stephen King, who tweeted, “No One Will Save You: Brilliant, daring, involving, scary. You have to go back over 60 years, to a Twilight Zone episode called “The Invaders,” to find anything remotely like it. Truly unique.”
Duffield was also nominated for a Bram Stoker Award for Best Screenplay, as well as an Astra Film Award for Best Horror Feature. Additionally, Dever received nominations for a Fangoria Chainsaw Award and a Critics' Choice Award for her performance in the movie.
No One Will Save You premiered on September 19, 2023, as a Hulu exclusive. Audiences had to pay for a Hulu subscription in order to see this movie. After three years, audiences can finally stream this hit film for free.
