Sean McVay seems sick of the Los Angeles Rams losing games because of their special teams struggles.
The Rams fell to 2-3 on the season after a heartbreaking overtime loss to the Buffalo Bills on Monday night. Kicker Harrison Mevis missed a 50-year field goal attempt in the first quarter, then had a 48-yard field goal blocked in overtime that led to the Bills’ winning possession.
McVay didn’t mince words about his team’s special teams struggles when speaking to the media postgame.
“In the kicking game, especially with out PAT, field goal [unites], not even close to good enough. It cost us the game tonight,” the Rams’ head coach said.
He added, “I’m gonna evaluate everything,” right after, which suggested he’s going to take a good, long look at whether changes need to be made within special teams, both among the staff and those on the field.
McVay has a history of mid-season special teams changes. He fired special-teams coordinator Chase Blackburn after a loss to the Seattle Seahawks last year.
Mevis has been abysmal this season. His 55.6% field goal percentage is dead last in the league, and he can’t seem to make a kick when the Rams most need him to.
Whether it’s Mevis getting the slip or someone on the Rams’ special teams staff, it’s hard to imagine this unit looks the same when Los Angeles faces the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.
