Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has defended the federal government’s decision to impose emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Speaking at a high-level meeting of the Apex Committee on Thursday, Shehbaz blamed the previous provincial government for weakening counterterrorism efforts and allowing terrorists to return.
He said the government could not remain a silent observer when national security was at stake.
The prime minister said around 5,000 police positions remained vacant during the previous government’s tenure.
He pointed to delays in Safe City projects, limited improvements in the Counter Terrorism Department and shortcomings in police training.
PM said the federal government had offered resources to the previous two KP chief ministers to tackle terrorism, but alleged that the offers were not acted upon.
The prime minister also announced that an advisory council had been formed to help improve the situation in the province.
He directed a transparent investigation into a school roof-collapse tragedy that killed dozens of children and instructed the KP governor to visit the site.
Speaking at the meeting, Governor Kundi said peace and development were the province’s top priorities. He said residents should not have to choose between the two.
