CHRISTCHURCH, Oct 22: New Zealand-developed ‘Sonic’ technology has been introduced into the Decision Review System (DRS) for the ongoing India tour of New Zealand, making its debut in the three-format international series.
Approved following extensive testing and independent assessment in consultation with the International Cricket Council (ICC), the technology uses advanced audio analysis to help third umpires detect potential contact between bat and ball during reviews. The system has been developed by New Zealand-based Virtual Eye, which has held ICC accreditation for ball-tracking technology. Its inclusion means Virtual Eye will provide the complete suite of DRS technology for the series, in collaboration with broadcaster Sky. New Zealand Cricket chief marketing and commercial officer Glenn Critchley said the approval followed a rigorous process involving the ICC, the BCCI, Sky and Virtual Eye, with decision-making accuracy remaining a priority.
