European football: Barcelona sets new perfect winning record

Barcelona have become the only club across Europe’s top five domestic leagues to maintain a 100 per cent winning record in their league campaign after Manchester City suffered their first defeat of the 2026/2027 season.

The development followed Aston Villa’s 2-1 victory over Manchester City at Villa Park on Saturday, a result that ended Pep Guardiola’s side’s winning start in the English Premier League and left Barcelona as the only team in England, Spain, Italy, Germany and France to have won all their league matches so far. Blueprint reports

Barcelona have secured nine victories from nine La Liga matches, collecting the maximum 27 points and matching Real Madrid’s record for the best start to a Spanish league season.

The Catalan side have also demonstrated considerable attacking strength, scoring 39 goals and conceding nine in their opening nine league fixtures under head coach Hansi Flick.

Their latest league victory came against Real Betis, whom they defeated 5-2 on October 17 to register their ninth consecutive win in La Liga.

Manchester City had been among the clubs keeping pace with Barcelona, having won their opening seven Premier League matches before travelling to Villa Park. Their defeat, however, ended that perfect run.

Jackson’s brace ends City’s winning run

Aston Villa secured the victory through two goals from Nicolas Jackson, who opened the scoring in the sixth minute before restoring the hosts’ lead in the 60th minute.

Erling Haaland scored Manchester City’s equaliser, but Villa held on to claim all three points and hand the visitors their first league defeat of the campaign.

The result was a setback for Guardiola, whose side had begun the season with the consistency expected of a team seeking to challenge for the Premier League title.

City’s defeat also changed the picture among the leading clubs in Europe’s major domestic competitions. While several teams had enjoyed strong starts, Barcelona’s nine victories meant they remained the only side with a flawless league record after the Manchester club dropped points.

The distinction is based on domestic league results rather than performances across all competitions. Clubs can maintain winning runs in cup competitions or European tournaments while having already dropped points in their respective leagues.

For Barcelona, the achievement reflects a strong start in a competition where maintaining consistency over the opening weeks can help establish an early advantage in the title race.

Flick’s side matching a historic record

Barcelona’s nine wins from nine matches have placed the team alongside Real Madrid’s achievement at the beginning of the 1968/1969 La Liga season, when the Spanish rivals also won their first nine league fixtures.

The Catalan club’s attacking output has made the run particularly notable. Their 39 goals in nine matches underline the team’s ability to create scoring opportunities and convert them into results.

The goals have also come from several players, rather than depending entirely on one attacking figure. Barcelona’s spread of goalscorers has provided Flick with multiple options in the final third and made the side more difficult for opponents to contain.

The team’s latest performances have reinforced the impression that Barcelona are capable of sustaining pressure on opponents through aggressive attacking play while maintaining enough control to secure victories.

However, the defensive figures also show that the side have conceded nine goals during their opening nine league games. Although their attacking numbers are impressive, the ability to maintain defensive discipline against stronger opposition will remain important as the campaign progresses.

Barcelona will also need to manage the physical demands of competing in La Liga and European competitions, where injuries, suspensions and fixture congestion can affect consistency.

El Clasico presents next major test

Barcelona’s immediate challenge is a meeting with Real Madrid in El Clasico on Sunday, October 25.

The match carries significant implications for the early title race, with Barcelona entering the encounter after winning all nine of their league games. A tenth consecutive victory would extend their perfect start and allow Flick’s side to move beyond the record they currently share with Real Madrid.

The contest will also test Barcelona’s ability to maintain their momentum against one of their fiercest rivals. Real Madrid will have an opportunity to disrupt the run and prevent the Catalans from strengthening their position at the top of the standings.

El Clasico is traditionally one of the most closely watched fixtures in world football, attracting global attention because of the rivalry between the clubs and the quality of players involved.

For Barcelona, the objective will be to translate their impressive early-season form into a result against a direct title rival. For Real Madrid, the match offers an opportunity to close the gap and challenge the leaders.

The outcome could influence the confidence of both teams as the season develops, although the result alone will not determine the eventual destination of the league title.

A strong start, but a long season ahead

Barcelona’s position as the only club with a perfect winning record across Europe’s five major leagues highlights the consistency they have shown in the opening weeks of the campaign.

Manchester City’s loss to Aston Villa demonstrates how quickly such a distinction can change, particularly in competitions where leading teams face difficult away fixtures and opponents capable of exploiting small mistakes.

For Barcelona, the priority will be to preserve their winning momentum while balancing the demands of domestic and continental football.

Their attacking form has provided a strong foundation, but the challenge now is to sustain that level against increasingly difficult opposition and avoid the lapses that can cost points over a long season.

With El Clasico next on the schedule, Barcelona have an immediate opportunity to strengthen their position and extend their remarkable start. A victory would make their run even more significant, while a dropped point would end the perfect record they have built.

For now, Flick’s team stand alone among clubs in England, Spain, Italy, Germany and France with a 100 per cent domestic league winning record, following Manchester City’s defeat at Villa Park.
