By Zoila Palma: Prime Minister John Briceño says Belize is committed to playing a leadership role in advancing solutions to challenges facing the country and other small states as he leads a high-level delegation to the 2026 World Bank-IMF Annual Meetings in Bangkok, Thailand.
In a video message shared on Facebook, Briceño outlined his Government’s efforts to secure international support for priorities affecting Belizeans, including energy security, agricultural livelihoods and the growing sargassum crisis. “Belize is here to help lead,” the Prime Minister said.
He added, “And we will keep pressing for results that our people can see and feel.”
On Tuesday, October 13, Briceño met with IDB President Ilan Goldfajn to discuss Belize’s energy agenda, including high electricity costs, renewable energy generation, transmission infrastructure and regional energy integration. Their discussions also addressed support for BEL, a submarine cable upgrade to San Pedro and opportunities for greater technical and financial engagement by the IDB.
The Prime Minister also highlighted efforts to secure financing for sargassum removal and explore the potential of turning sargassum by-products into energy.
