Mokokchung, Oct 17: Three men from Assam have died after allegedly consuming suspected adulterated liquor at Longphayimsen village in Nagaland’s Mokokchung district, taking the death toll in the suspected liquor-related incidents in Mokokchung and Tuensang districts to 23.
The deceased, identified as Chungkai (50), Samuel (24) and Bumbai Urang (36), were agricultural workers temporarily residing in the village under Longtho Police Station, according to the Mokokchung Police PRO.
Police received information about Chungkai’s death at Rajmati in Longphayimsen at around 10.30 pm on October 15. Samuel later died at the village’s Health and Wellness Centre, while Bumbai succumbed at around 9.45 pm on October 16 after undergoing treatment at the Primary Health Centre in Tsurangkong.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the three men consumed MC Rum at the residence of one of them on the night of October 14. They reportedly developed symptoms including giddiness, nausea and blurred vision.
Police enquiries indicated that Bumbai had allegedly purchased four bottles of rum from New Sonowal in Assam about a month earlier. The men are suspected to have shared the liquor during their gathering. The wife of one of the deceased has been identified as a witness.
The bodies of Chungkai and Samuel were taken to Imkongliba Memorial District Hospital in Mokokchung for post-mortem examinations. Police said no remnants of the liquor were recovered during preliminary searches of the scene and residence.
Investigators are now working to establish the exact cause of death and trace the source of the suspected adulterated liquor. Relevant exhibits will be sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory in Kolkata for chemical analysis.
Police said the case is being treated seriously and legal action will follow based on the investigation. The suspected adulteration has yet to be confirmed through medical and forensic findings.
