Speaking on Today’s Woman, Stephana Sefa Boateng has called for a balanced approach to raising boys and girls, warning that failing to prepare both genders for changing social expectations could threaten family relationships and weaken the social structure.
She believes that as more women grow into confident, independent, and influential individuals, there is an equal need to raise men who can relate to them with understanding, empathy, and maturity.
According to her, society must find ways to prepare men to build healthy relationships with women who are increasingly taking on leadership roles and making independent decisions.
Reflecting on changes in family dynamics, Sefa Boateng noted that parenting in previous generations often placed men in positions of authority, with women expected to obey instructions. However, she believes communication within modern marriages requires a different approach.
She explained that the way a man speaks to his wife matters, adding that couples must learn to communicate in ways that encourage mutual understanding rather than relying solely on traditional expectations of authority.
Sefa Boateng also urged mothers raising boys to teach them empathy, kindness, and emotional maturity before they become men. She stressed that these values are essential in helping them build healthy relationships and understand the perspectives of others.
At the same time, she encouraged parents to guide girls on how they communicate and present themselves. She clarified that this should not mean suppressing their confidence or reducing their independence, but helping them understand the importance of decorum.
Sharing a personal experience, she said she had to leave her job partly because her communication style was perceived differently in a workplace where people spoke more softly.
Her comments highlight the need for men and women to adapt to changing social expectations while maintaining mutual respect.
Ultimately, Sefa Boateng believes that raising stronger families requires both genders to develop empathy, balance, and understanding.
