Pakistani supermodel and actor Vaneeza Ahmed has urged women to read their Nikkahnama carefully before marriage, sharing how she did not fully review her own marriage contract until her relationship broke down.
Speaking during show ‘Gup Shab’ Vaneeza said that despite being an educated, independent and established woman when she married, she had not examined important details of her Nikkahnama, including clauses concerning Haq Mehr and maintenance.
According to entertainment publication Reviewit.pk, Vaneeza reflected on the experience to highlight the importance of understanding the rights and obligations set out in a marriage contract before signing it.
Vaneeza explained that she only read the relevant clauses of her Nikkahnama after her marriage encountered difficulties.
She urged women not to overlook the legal and financial terms of their marriage contracts, stressing the importance of knowing their rights from the outset.
Using an analogy, she said people should read the terms and conditions before jumping out of a plane, rather than waiting until they are already in the air.
Her message was that women should approach marriage contracts with the same care they would give any other important legal document.
A nikkahnama records the terms of a Muslim marriage and includes provisions relating to the rights and responsibilities of both spouses.
Clauses concerning Haq Mehr, maintenance and other agreed conditions can have important legal and financial implications. Understanding these provisions before signing can help couples make informed decisions and clarify their obligations.
Vaneeza’s remarks highlight the importance of ensuring that women understand the terms of their marriage contracts rather than relying solely on others to explain them.
