Comic Relief returned to New York on Monday night, 40 years after the homeless and child poverty charity event debuted with an iconic program hosted by three comedy legends. This year, John Oliver hosted at Carnegie Hall, with several familiar faces from The Daily Show on stage and a diverse lineup of stand-ups rounding out the night’s talent.
Oliver hosted with his charming, self-deprecating schtick, joined by comic actress and podcaster Mary Beth Barone, Indian American comic and New York Times bestselling author Zarna Garg, Josh Johnson and Roy Wood Jr. Johnson and Wood are Daily Show alums, as is Oliver himself, who cut his teeth there before his beloved Last Week Tonight debuted on HBO.
HBO was, in fact, the original home of Comic Relief when Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg and Billy Crystal hosted the premiere event in 1986. The trio, already established stars, had such charisma on stage that Comic Relief became a runaway success for the charity and HBO, distributing $50 million toward health care services for unhoused people across the country.
Oliver got the show started by kicking his heels together and pointing out that stand-up comedy and a venue like Carnegie Hall are opposing ovals in a Venn diagram, with stand-up degrading such a magnificent space. Then it was time to bring out the talent. Irish comedian Joanne McNally was first on stage, delighting the packed house with the woes of being single and 40.
Johnson has found a solid fanbase from his Daily Show appearances, which grew after his debut HBO stand-up special, Josh Johnson: Symphony, premiered in May. At Carnegie Hall on Monday, he couldn’t resist zeroing in on the latest loss of a Trump administration press secretary and made it the thrust of his set. With Johnson rarely straying from the topic during his tight set, Katie Zacharia’s five-day stint got what will probably be its best tribute and final bit of attention.
Garg may have been the comic the Carnegie Hall crowd was least likely to expect, but she may have gotten the biggest laughs of the night, thanks to the sharp humor in her tales of married life. Her main rival for that was the raucous set from George Wallace, who partly brought the house down with a bit about jokes for the high rollers in the front row versus the nosebleed seats. Wood sustained the night’s momentum, and Barone killed it with fresh-from-the-notebook jokes that were like a darker version of McNally’s take on singlehood.
At the event, Comic Relief presented the 2026 Visionary Award, which recognizes leaders and organizations that advance systemic change for children and families facing poverty. This year, the award went to ServiceNow for its work empowering young people and investing in youth-led projects.
