Leeds United have started planning for their next major investment in attack, with Daniel Farke facing important decisions about his centre-forward options as the 2026/27 season progresses.
The Whites entered the campaign with Dominic Calvert-Lewin leading the line after his summer arrival. The England international has scored four Premier League goals, offering Farke a physical presence who can challenge defenders, hold up possession and create opportunities for supporting runners.
Leeds have collected 10 points from their opening seven league matches, recording two wins, four draws and one defeat. Although that return keeps them competitive in seventh place, their forward options require careful consideration as the club plans beyond the current campaign.
Lukas Nmecha’s contract expires in June 2027, and uncertainty over a possible extension has raised questions about his future. According to The Leeds Press, signing another striker ranks among Leeds’ priorities for 2027, with the club seeking a forward who could partner Calvert-Lewin or eventually replace him.
That search has reportedly brought Rennes striker Esteban Lepaul into focus.
Leeds United receive encouragement in pursuit of French striker
The 26-year-old has scored 37 career Ligue 1 goals and made an impressive start to the 2026/27 campaign, finding the net seven times in seven league appearances. His form has earned him a place in the France national squad.
Lepaul might want to avoid a January move because he might not want to disrupt his recent international breakthrough. A summer 2027 transfer therefore appears more realistic, with Leeds reportedly among the leading contenders.
However, Rennes hold a strong negotiating position because the French forward remains under contract until June 2030. His valuation could rise significantly if Premier League rivals join the race. Leeds have the financial backing of their 49ers ownership group, although the eventual fee remains uncertain.
Would Lepaul improve Farke’s attack alongside Calvert-Lewin?

Lepaul’s movement inside the penalty area offers Leeds United a different attacking threat. While Calvert-Lewin uses his strength to occupy centre-backs, the Frenchman prefers to find space and finish chances with minimal touches.
That contrast could prove valuable against opponents who defend deep at Elland Road. Leeds often need sharp movement between defenders when crosses and cutbacks fail to create clear openings, and Lepaul’s instincts could help address that problem.
Still, Leeds must consider the cost and the effect on their existing structure. A transfer worth £40m-£50m would represent a substantial commitment, although that range is illustrative rather than a reported asking price. His reported weekly wage of £52,500 would equal approximately £2.73m annually before bonuses.
Waiting until summer would give Farke time to assess Nmecha’s situation and decide whether Leeds need a partner for Calvert-Lewin or a future replacement. Lepaul looks like an attractive option, but Leeds United should pursue him only if the fee reflects his potential and leaves sufficient funds for other squad needs.
