NAIROBI – Seven people remain unaccounted for after a multi-storey building under construction collapsed in Eastleigh, Nairobi, on Friday, October 23, as rescue teams continued searching the rubble for possible survivors.
According to Kenyans.co.ke, the building collapsed along 9th Street, near Day to Day Supermarket, in Kamukunji Sub-County.
Kenya’s Interior Cabinet Secretary, Kipchumba Murkomen, said 67 construction workers were at the site when the building collapsed. He said 66 escaped unharmed, while one sustained injuries and was in stable condition in hospital.
However, seven other people believed to have been operating inside the building were reported missing, with rescue teams working to reach those who may be trapped beneath the debris.
Murkomen said the building had 11 shops on the ground floor and an occupied basement at the time of the collapse. The structure reportedly did not have an occupation certificate.
The Kenya Red Cross earlier reported that two injured people had been taken to Kenyatta National Hospital. It also said 26 people previously reported missing had been traced and accounted for, although it was not clear whether this update included the seven people cited by Murkomen.
A multi-agency team involving the Kenya Defence Forces, National Police Service, Nairobi City County Government, National Youth Service and Kenya Red Cross was coordinating search and rescue operations.
The National Construction Authority (NCA) said the building was registered with the authority on July 30, 2025, and that preliminary investigations into the collapse were underway.
Nairobi police said efforts were being made to locate the building’s owner. Authorities had not confirmed the cause of the collapse.
Murkomen said the circumstances surrounding the incident would be investigated by relevant national and county government agencies, working with professional bodies, and that those found responsible would be held accountable.
The collapse occurred at around 1 p.m. on Friday, disrupting activity in the busy commercial area. Emergency responders deployed machinery to clear debris and search for possible survivors, while police worked to keep crowds away from the site and allow rescue teams to operate.
