A free and open-source app called DigUp lets users search files on their computer by describing what they contain instead of relying only on filenames or exact keywords.
Available for Mac, Windows, and Linux, DigUp uses Google DeepMind’s EmbeddingGemma 2 model to search photos, PDFs, documents, audio, videos, and, optionally, source code.
Users can search phrases such as “zebra in a video,” “where they talk about sleep,” or “the clause about pets in the lease.” DigUp can then open the matching video or audio at the relevant moment or take users directly to the correct PDF page.

Google DeepMind released EmbeddingGemma 2 in October 2026.
The 740-million-parameter model places text, images, audio, and video into the same shared space, allowing a text query to match content inside different file types.
It supports more than 100 languages and is available under the Apache 2.0 license. Cross-language searches also work, meaning an English query can find content written in Bengali, Arabic, or other supported languages.
DigUp also combines semantic search with exact matching for things such as names, invoice numbers and error codes.
Everything Runs Locally
DigUp says indexed files never leave the user’s computer.
The app only connects to the internet to download its 865MB model once and to check for updates once per day. The update check can be disabled.
There is no account requirement and no telemetry.
Users choose which folders DigUp can access, and it does not change, move, or upload files.
What DigUp Can Search
DigUp supports common image formats, PDFs including scans, documents such as TXT, Markdown, RTF, DOCX, ODT and HTML, plus audio and video of any length.
Audio is processed in overlapping 30-second sections, while videos are indexed using sampled frames and their soundtracks.
Optional code search can find functions by describing what they do. Results can open directly at the relevant line in editors including VS Code, Cursor, Zed, Sublime Text, and JetBrains IDEs.
