Johannesburg delivery driver caught on camera allegedly eating customer’s chips sparks heated debate

• Surveillance footage shared by @thefeedjhb caught a Joburg delivery driver helping himself to a customer's chips beside his delivery bike
• The clip sparked a heated debate online, with many South Africans divided over whether the driver's actions were unacceptable or understandable
• Several viewers shared their own experiences with delivery orders, questioning whether drivers are paid enough to resist the temptation

A Johannesburg delivery driver was caught on camera snacking on a customer's chips in surveillance footage that went viral on 15 October. The clip, posted by @thefeedjhb on Instagram, showed the driver standing next to his delivery bike with the insulated storage compartment open, picking at what appeared to be a customer's order.

The video spread quickly, splitting South Africans into two firm camps: those who saw it as a breach of trust and hygiene, and those who argued that low wages made the act more understandable than outrageous.

Not everyone was ready to condemn the driver in the video by @thefeedjhb. Some viewers pointed out that many fast-food outlets use hygiene safety seals on orders, raising questions about whether the footage was even what it appeared to be. Watch the delivery driver footage that divided Mzansi:

South Africans React

Whether it was a genuine theft or a misread moment, the clip tapped into something much bigger: a real conversation about fair pay, hunger, and how South Africans treat the workers who bring food to their doors. The comment section was packed with strong opinions from all sides:

@candiceaturner wrote: "I always order an extra little something or a drink for the driver. Same with my Checkers orders. My grandma always said if someone is desperate enough to steal food, we should be kind."

@charmainp04 asked:

"Fast food outlets have hygiene safety seals/stickers on each order package. The customer will surely know if the seal was broken? Could this be his own food that he stopped to eat?"

@_delicious_muffin_ said:

"We always give the guys a tip, so to steal like that is kak!"

@dannybekithembamlilo noted:

"I understand this is a crime and also a hygienic risk to the client/customer, but these guys earn peanuts and most can barely afford a meal during lunch"

@monique_joubert86 shared:

"I don't mind this at all. With what is going on in this country. Imagine the average person struggling in this economy; imagine these drivers that don't get paid enough for what they do! I'll give them chips"
