Eight IT specialization areas available
CSIS has identified eight broad areas in which applicants may work:
- IT and cyber security
- Network technology and security
- Server and cloud infrastructure
- Business intelligence
- IT service management
- End-user systems
- Application support
- Communication technology
The agency has also confirmed that recent graduates and people approaching graduation can apply, provided they meet the applicable eligibility requirements.
Six key eligibility criteria for applicants
Candidates must satisfy the relevant academic or professional requirements and demonstrate the competencies needed for the roles.
1. Relevant post-secondary education
Applicants may qualify by completing a two-year post-secondary programme in a relevant discipline, such as computer science, information technology, cyber security, data analysis or software engineering, at a recognised Canadian institution.
2. An undergraduate degree and relevant experience
Candidates with an undergraduate degree may qualify if they also have at least one year of relevant work experience.
3. A technologist diploma or professional designation
Applicants with a technologist diploma or an equivalent professional designation may qualify if they have at least two years of relevant experience.
4. Recognition of qualifications obtained outside Canada
Applicants educated outside Canada may be considered, provided they obtain an assessment establishing the Canadian equivalency of their qualifications.
5. Demonstrated professional competencies
CSIS will assess candidates on adaptability, analytical thinking, problem-solving and communication skills. These competencies will be evaluated through a competency-based interview.
6. Availability for the role and applicable language requirements
Some positions require employees to work flexible or rotational shifts across a 24-hour, seven-day schedule.
Language requirements also differ by position. Some vacancies require English proficiency alone, while bilingual roles require a BBB/BBB rating in both English and French.
CSIS states that higher academic qualifications, including bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, may be counted towards experience.
Canadian citizenship is mandatory
Despite the range of qualifications accepted, the recruitment exercise has one non-negotiable condition: applicants must be Canadian citizens.
This means that meeting the educational and professional requirements does not make a foreign national eligible to apply without Canadian citizenship.
The positions are therefore not open to international applicants solely on the basis of their IT qualifications or work experience.
CSIS issues confidentiality advice to applicants
The agency has also advised prospective applicants to exercise discretion during the recruitment process.
CSIS asks candidates not to discuss their applications with people outside their partner or close family members. It further urges those individuals to handle the information discreetly.
With applications closing on November 30, 2026, eligible Canadian citizens interested in the permanent IT Analyst positions should review the official government vacancy details and ensure they meet the requirements before applying.
