Georgia Southern is clinging to the dream of a high-ranking finish in the Sun Belt Conference as it visits Old Dominion on Thursday. The Eagles had their wings clipped 27-24 at conference leader James Madison just five days ago, falling short in a late comeback attempt to record its first conference loss of the season.
Clay Helton’s side edged Coastal Conference 31-24 one week prior and has high hopes of beginning a rebuild here, while defeat would be a real hammer blow to this year’s prospects. Georgia Southern has one odd record this season in that neither rushing or receiving leaders have a touchdown to their name, with RB David Mbadinga (233 rush yds) and WR Josh Dallas (290 rec. yds) each yet to cross the whitewash.
The same is true for Monarchs running back Devin Roche, who has 348 rush yards under his belt without a single score to show for his troubles. Quarterback Quinn Henicle is not far behind on 323 yards from 81 carries, scoring four TDs in the process, but his passing game has left a lot to be desired.
Old Dominion has won the last three editions of this Sun Belt rivalry but appears to be at serious risk of seeing that record falter at S.B. Ballard Stadium.
