Mexico Exports to Jump 26%, UN Body Says

MEXICO · TRADE

Mexico exports are on course to jump 26% this year, to about US$835 billion, according to a forecast published on Thursday 15 October. Only Peru, at 30%, is expected to grow faster among the region’s 33 economies.

The forecast comes from the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, known as Cepal, a United Nations body based in Santiago, Chile. It matters to US readers because Mexico exports mostly go to the United States, and the jump rests on AI-linked computer hardware.

What Cepal Forecasts for the Region

Cepal’s annual trade outlook expects the value of Latin American and Caribbean goods exports to rise 20% in 2026. That would be the fastest growth since the post-pandemic rebound of 2021.

Prices are forecast to rise 11% and volumes 9%, which would be a sixth straight year of growth in volume. Twenty-eight of the region’s 33 countries are expected to export more, and 16 of them by double digits.

Imports are forecast to rise 16% as household spending recovers and companies buy more parts and machinery. Cepal’s executive secretary, José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, said the region still faces an uncertain geopolitical climate.

Where Mexico Stands in the Ranking

Mexico exports are forecast at US$835.3 billion in 2026, a rise of 26% on 2025. That puts Mexico second in the region behind Peru, whose 30% gain comes mainly from metal exports.

Several of the region’s biggest gains come from raw materials, which benefit from higher prices. Mexico exports stand out because the growth comes from manufactured goods.

Cepal says Mexico’s manufactured exports grew more than 26% in the first half of 2026. Cepal credits the integration of North American supply chains and the move of production to Mexico.

Why AI Hardware Drives the Jump

Cepal says data-processing machinery and other goods linked to artificial-intelligence investment led the growth outside the car industry. Daniela García, who heads the commission’s trade division, said electronics exports are forecast to grow more than 100% and machinery more than 50%.

Mexico exports computer equipment to the US market, helped by production that moved closer to American customers in recent years. Monthly figures from Mexico’s statistics institute had already pointed this way, as The Rio Times reported when Mexican electronics sales doubled in August.

The share of the gain that comes from AI-related goods is not broken out. The rest comes from other factory exports that also grew in the first half.

The Trade Pact Review Hangs Over the Boom

The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA, called T-MEC in Spanish) is the 2020 trade pact that lets most goods cross the three borders without tariffs. Cepal calls its coming review central for Mexico, since it covers trade, investment and the supply chains behind the export boom.

The commission fears Washington may not renew the pact on current terms, because it wants a smaller trade deficit. It also warns that separate US talks could split the pact in two, as our guide to Mexico’s place in North America explains.

Mexican press reports say US-Canada talks broke down in late August. The process could shift after the US midterm elections in November, while Cepal also cites unpredictable US trade policy and logistics problems.

What It Means for You

For US companies that buy Mexican-made electronics, machinery or parts, the forecast points to strong supply. It also points to exposure to the pact review, since any tariff change would hit the fastest-growing factories.

For investors watching Mexico, the figure shows strong trade while other forecasts are cooler. The International Monetary Fund on 13 October trimmed its Mexico growth forecast for next year to 1.8%.

What Is Not Known

The forecast is a projection, and the final 2026 figure for Mexico exports will come only after the year ends. How long the AI-hardware boom lasts is open.

The outcome of the USMCA review is open, as is whether Washington will agree to renew the pact. Cepal has not said how much of Mexico’s gain would be lost if tariff terms changed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much will Mexico’s exports grow in 2026?

Cepal forecasts Mexico’s goods exports will rise 26% in 2026 to about US$835 billion. Only Peru, at 30%, is forecast to grow faster.

What is Cepal?

Cepal is the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, a United Nations body based in Santiago, Chile. It publishes the region’s main annual trade outlook.

Why are Mexico exports growing so fast?

Electronics and machinery tied to artificial-intelligence investment lead the gain, along with other factory goods. Cepal forecasts electronics exports to grow more than 100%.

What does this mean for the United States?

US buyers get more Mexican-made computer hardware and parts, but they also depend on the outcome of the USMCA review. A change in tariff terms would reach the same factories.
