Government college teachers in Tamil Nadu have announced a state-wide protest on Thursday against the government’s decision to restrict interim pension for employees with 10 to 18 years of service to ₹10,000.
In a statement, S. Suresh, general secretary, Tamil Nadu Government College Teachers’ Association, demanded the immediate withdrawal of a letter issued by the Finance Department on September 11 restricting the pension for everyone to a flat rate of ₹10,000, apart from the Dearness Allowance (DA) payout. “From Group D employees to college professors, the letter has put everyone in the same bracket. This goes against principles of natural justice,” Mr. Suresh observed.
A G.O. issued on June 16 stated that as an interim measure, till the regulations of the new TAPS scheme were finalised, 30% of the last drawn monthly basic pay or ₹10,000, whichever was higher, would be paid to the retired employees. The September letter, he said, has shocked all government employees when it restricted the interim pay for employees between 10 and 18 years of service to ₹10,000 plus DA.
While the value of Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) for Group D employees would be around ₹10 lakh, the same for college teachers would be around ₹70 lakh. “How is it fair to bunch all of them in one category,” he asked.
Further, the letter stated that “the excess amount paid, including the dearness relief, shall be recovered in 10 equal instalments from the interim payout/interim family payout from the month of September 2026”, which has caused much consternation among government employees, Mr. Suresh added.
The TNGCTA demanded the immediate release of the full set of rules for Tamil Nadu Assured Pension Scheme (TAPS) and wanted the government to take steps to revert to the Old Pension Scheme. The statement said that demonstrations will be held at the gates of all government colleges on Thursday.
