Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein and UAE’s Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan discussed on Wednesday options to de-escalate tensions in the region.
During a phone conversation, the two sides discussed bilateral relations between the two countries, reaffirming the depth of the bonds that bind them together as well as a shared commitment to strengthening and expanding these ties, according to a statement released by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry.
The discussion addressed the outcomes of the 52nd session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers, which took place in Baghdad on October 17–18. Both parties emphasized the importance of leveraging these achievements to enhance communication, foster unity, and encourage collaborative Islamic initiatives.
Along with regional developments, the discussion included approaches to foster a peaceful understanding that helps reduce tensions and improve security and stability in the region.
Hussein said on Sunday that Baghdad is attempting to arrange a meeting between Iran and the Gulf States as part of diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and advance regional stability.
There are ongoing discussions between Iraq, the Gulf countries, and Iran aimed at bringing their viewpoints closer together, according to Hussein.
“We are trying to organize a meeting in Baghdad between Iran and the Gulf States,” Hussein said, without specifying a date or the degree of representation expected.
The proposal comes amid regional tensions that severely impacted maritime shipping and security in the Arabian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.
