Guwahati, Oct 13: An Andhra Pradesh Police team visited Assam’s Panikhaiti Police Station on Tuesday and recorded statements from the family members of Himashree Boro, the 20-year-old student whose body was recovered near railway tracks in Andhra Pradesh under mysterious circumstances.
The team gathered information from Boro’s mother and other relatives as part of the ongoing investigation into her death. The officers are also expected to visit the family’s residence later in the day.
A family member said the police team had assured them of a thorough investigation into the case.
“The Andhra Pradesh Police team came here for an inquiry and took information from Himashree’s mother and other family members. We shared whatever information we had with them,” the family member said.
The family has also lodged a First Information Report (FIR) at a Government Railway Police (GRP) station on Monday, naming five people whom they suspect of involvement in Boro’s death. They are Govinda Reddy, Ajinur Hossain, Sumitra Deori, Jyoti Choudhury and Avinash.
Explaining the basis for their suspicions, a family member alleged that Choudhury, who was part of the dance troupe, had encouraged Boro to travel alone. Avinash, meanwhile, was the person who helped her board the train.
“If Jyoti had not encouraged Himashree, she would not have had the courage to travel alone from there,” the family member said.
The family also questioned statements allegedly made by Reddy, the event manager, after Boro went missing and her body was subsequently found.
“When the report about Himashree going missing came out, Govinda Reddy said that she was there and would be found. But when her dead body was found, he said she had been raped and assaulted and made other such statements,” the family member alleged.
The allegations have not been established, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited Boro’s family at Chapaidong in Guwahati on Monday and expressed his condolences.
He said he had written to the Union Railway Minister and the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, seeking a thorough investigation into the case. An SIT has also been constituted by Andhra Pradesh Police to investigate the death.
Boro, a student of B Borooah College in Guwahati, had travelled to Visakhapatnam with a dance troupe for a cultural event. She boarded the Dibrugarh-bound Vivek Express on October 6 to return to Assam but went missing during the journey.
Her body was later recovered near railway tracks between Dusi and Ponduru stations in Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam district.
Before contact with her family and friends was lost, she had reportedly expressed concern about being surrounded by men in a crowded train compartment.
Preliminary post-mortem findings, according to Andhra Pradesh Police, showed no signs of physical or sexual violence.
Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and death, with forensic teams, dog squads and drone teams assisting the probe.
