Jang Dong-hyuk, leader of the People Power Party, criticized President Lee Jae-myung for posting a rebuttal citing Google's Gemini chatbot in response to criticism over allowing the head of the Major Crimes Investigation Agency to sit in on Cabinet meetings. "He has gone so far as to make Gemini a friend of the president," Jang said. "He once said social media was his lifeline, and now he is begging artificial intelligence to save his life."
Speaking at a supreme council meeting at the National Assembly on the 22nd, Jang addressed the controversy over the attendance of the heads of the Public Prosecution Agency and the Major Crimes Investigation Agency at Cabinet meetings. "The president is indulging in a one-man victory lap, saying Gemini called the argument against their attendance an unconstitutional stretch," he said.
"Is this the time for the president to be sitting around with Gemini?" Jang said. "The public is on the verge of ruin from soaring home prices and chaos in the jeonse and monthly rental markets, yet the president could not be more at leisure." Jeonse is a Korean lease system requiring a large lump-sum deposit instead of monthly rent.
"I also asked Gemini what should be done about the president's trial," he said. "Naturally, it said the trial should resume." He added, "The only answer the public wants right now is the resumption of President Lee's trial."
On the introduction of single-stock leveraged exchange-traded funds, Jang laid responsibility on the government. Citing losses of more than 6 trillion won among retail investors in single-stock leveraged ETFs tied to Samsung Electronics and SK hynix as of mid-August, he called the products "a joint production by Kim Yong-beom, Lee Eok-won and Lee Chan-jin."
"They cut corners even on the review process to fit the local election schedule," he said. "They intervened and abused their authority, and now that trouble has erupted, they say it is difficult for the government to intervene."
"Ahead of the local elections, they mobilized the National Pension Service to prop up the stock market, deferred rebalancing and sharply raised the target weighting for domestic equities," he said. "None of this would be possible without a decision by the president."
"If the National Pension Service was illegally mobilized to win an election, that is clear grounds for impeachment and a serious crime," he said. "A parliamentary investigation and a special counsel probe must be carried out to establish the facts before it is too late."
