Grayscale now accepts crypto itself, not just dollars, in exchange for shares of ten of its exchange-traded products.
The asset manager has switched on in-kind investing across those funds. Eligible digital assets can go in, and fund shares come out, without first passing through cash.
What Grayscale actually changed
The rollout took effect on October 21, 2026, according to the research findings on Grayscale’s announcement. It covers ten ETP and ETF products in the firm’s lineup.
Grayscale frames the change as letting investors exchange eligible digital assets for shares. The mechanics run mainly through authorized participants, the large trading firms that create and redeem ETF shares in bulk.
With in-kind creation, an authorized participant can hand the fund the underlying crypto and receive shares in return. Redemptions can work the same way in reverse. The fund no longer has to buy or sell the asset on the open market every time shares are created or retired.
The named products include:
Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust ETF ($BTC), the firm’s lower-cost Bitcoin vehicle.
Grayscale Dogecoin Trust ETF ($GDOG), proof that the meme coin has a seat at the institutional table.
Grayscale Avalanche Staking ETF ($GAVA), one of the newer entrants.
Grayscale Zcash ETF ($ZCSH), a privacy-focused coin now wrapped in a regulated fund.
Earlier implementation steps involved amending participant agreements with trading firms including Jane Street and Virtu, along with agreement changes with custodians.
How crypto ETPs ended up cash-only
US spot digital asset ETPs historically relied entirely on cash for creations and redemptions. Gold and silver ETPs, by contrast, have long delivered the underlying metal in creations and redemptions.
The turning point came on July 29, 2025, when the Securities and Exchange Commission approved in-kind creation and redemption for spot crypto ETPs, effectively putting them on the same operational footing as conventional commodity ETPs.
Issuers still had to rewire agreements with custodians and trading partners before the new mechanism could go live. Grayscale’s ten-fund rollout is the result of months of that implementation work.
In one reported period, the share of Bitcoin ETP activity handled in-kind climbed from 28% in March to 62% by June.
What this means for investors and the market
Cash creations force a fund to trade the underlying asset whenever new shares are minted. In-kind transfers skip that step, which could lower execution costs and make it simpler for authorized participants to keep share prices close to the value of the assets underneath.
The research also points to reduced self-custody requirements as a possible benefit, along with a more secure investment setup.
In-kind capability is becoming table stakes across the spot crypto ETP market after the SEC’s 2025 approval. Grayscale offering it across ten products helps it keep pace with rivals, especially as fee pressure and product proliferation make operational efficiency a selling point.
