Predictive contracts linked to cryptos generated a weekly record volume of 2.7 billion dollars on Kalshi and Polymarket. Very short-term bets on the bitcoin price concentrate most of this activity, now surpassing that of all categories except sports.

In brief
- Kalshi and Polymarket crypto predictive markets reach a weekly record of 2.7 billion dollars.
- Kalshi’s Bitcoin contracts alone account for over 2 billion dollars.
- Bets on the BTC price in fifteen minutes strongly boost exchanges.
- Cryptos become the second most active category on both platforms, behind sports.
- This success comes with risks related to bitcoin volatility and short-term speculation.
Bitcoin contracts dominate the 2.7 billion record
The notional volume of crypto predictive markets reached 2.7 billion dollars in one week in mid-October. This amount adds up the value of all contracts traded on Kalshi and Polymarket, including when the same position changes ownership multiple times.
Kalshi’s Bitcoin contracts alone have produced over 2 billion dollars. The most active product asks users to predict whether BTC will rise or fall during the next fifteen minutes. A new deadline thus appears several times per day.
The main data show bitcoin’s weight in this record :
- Kalshi and Polymarket total 2.7 billion dollars on crypto contracts ;
- Kalshi’s Bitcoin markets alone exceed 2 billion dollars ;
- BTC thus represents over 74% of the combined crypto volume ;
- Polymarket also offers fifteen-minute contracts on bitcoin ;
- Polymarket’s U.S. branch generated between 92 and 101 million dollars on this format during its first full week ;
- Cryptos rank second on both platforms, behind sports.
This increase does not mean that 2.7 billion dollars of fresh money was deposited. A trader can buy then resell the same contract multiple times. Each operation increases the notional volume without creating an equivalent inflow of capital.
Fifteen-minute expirations speed up this phenomenon. The same user can open dozens of positions per day, unlike a market dedicated to an election or central bank decision that remains open for several weeks.
Short bets turn the BTC price into an event
Predictive markets rely on contracts whose price generally ranges between 0 and 1 dollar. A contract priced at 0.60 dollar theoretically reflects a 60% probability assigned to the event. It pays 1 dollar if the predicted result occurs and expires worthless otherwise.
In the case of BTC, users do not always seek to estimate its long-term price. They bet on a binary question: will the price be higher or lower than its current level in fifteen minutes?
This format resembles a very short-term derivative product. It attracts traders used to perpetual contracts, but its structure simplifies the decision. The user chooses a direction without directly managing leverage, a liquidation price, or an indefinite holding period.
The multiplication of these contracts also allows platforms to keep traders’ attention between major political or economic events. Bitcoin operates twenty-four hours a day and provides a continuous stream of verifiable results.
The record fits into a broader expansion of Kalshi. The platform recorded 19.03 billion dollars in contracts across all categories between October 5 and 11. Its daily volume has sometimes reached about 4.4 billion dollars.
A commercial success raising several risks
The growth of Bitcoin contracts offers platforms an activity less dependent on elections and sports competitions. It also interests crypto exchanges, which seek new revenue sources amid the slowdown of certain spot markets.
This activity carries high risks, however. Over a fifteen-minute period, the BTC price can react to a large order, a liquidation, or a liquidity problem. The result then depends more on market noise than on fundamental analysis.
The price displayed by the contract is also not a certain forecast. Its reliability depends on the number of participants, the depth of the order book, and the rules used to determine bitcoin’s final price.
Kalshi and Polymarket’s U.S. branch operate under a federal framework linked to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Several states nevertheless contest certain predictive contracts, especially those dedicated to sports, which they equate with gambling.
The 2.7 billion dollar record thus confirms the public’s attraction to bitcoin’s rapid movements. It mainly reveals platforms’ ability to turn each BTC fluctuation into a continuous succession of new speculative markets.
