Kazakhstan and China may launch a pilot project for autonomous cargo transportation. Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Transport has signed a memorandum of understanding with China TransInfo Group.
The parties signed the document at the New Silk Way international business forum, which focuses on the transport industry. The memorandum covers autonomous transport and the digitalization of the transport sector.
«The document lays the groundwork for long-term cooperation in introducing autonomous technologies and digital solutions in the transport sector,» the ministry noted.
The ministry added that Kazakhstan and Russia implemented a pilot project involving autonomous trucks on the Astana-Moscow route this year. The next step could be to launch a similar project with China along sections of international transport corridors.
In May 2026, the transport ministries of Kazakhstan and Russia, together with KAMAZ, successfully launched autonomous trucks on the Astana-Moscow route.
The trucks crossed the border simultaneously at the Zhanazhol checkpoint and continued to their destinations in autonomous mode.
The trucks completed the approximately 3,000-kilometer route without drivers. The new technology cut travel time by more than half, allowing the journey to be completed in just two days.
