New York Yankees swept by Tampa Bay Rays
The New York Yankees exited the 2026 American League Division Series on October 7 following a 4-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays at Yankee Stadium. The result completed a three-game postseason sweep on Wednesday.
New York finished the regular season with 93 wins, while Tampa Bay collected 98 victories and claimed the American League East title. Wednesday night’s elimination game drew 48,865 spectators to Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.

New York Yankees set postseason batting lows
The Yankees batted .130 against Tampa Bay during the division series, with a .192 on-base percentage, .239 slugging mark, and .431 OPS. Those figures established franchise lows for postseason matchups lasting more than one game.
New York collected 12 hits and seven walks while striking out 31 times across 27 innings. The lineup produced five runs in total and never held a lead against Tampa Bay’s pitchers at any point.

Tampa Bay Rays starter dominates Game 1
Drew Rasmussen pitched eight scoreless innings for Tampa Bay in the October 3 opener at Tropicana Field. The right-hander allowed one hit, walked two batters, and recorded 10 strikeouts against New York on Saturday night.
Austin Wells broke up Rasmussen’s hitless outing with an eighth-inning double but was thrown out attempting a triple. Jonathan Aranda’s solo homer off Gerrit Cole in the third supplied the run in the 1-0 victory.

Ben Rice makes Yankees postseason history
Ben Rice supplied New York’s entire offense in Game 2 on October 5, launching solo home runs against Freddy Peralta and Ian Seymour. Each drive came on a changeup from a different Tampa Bay pitcher.
Rice had another multihomer game against Boston in the Wild Card Series. His four long balls through October 5 made him the first Yankees player with multiple such performances during one postseason in franchise history.

New York Yankees make four defensive errors
New York committed four errors in Game 2, including three during the opening inning at Tropicana Field. Ryan McMahon mishandled a grounder, while Jazz Chisholm Jr. made an inaccurate throw as Tampa Bay scored once.
The Rays added four runs in the fifth inning, with Richie Palacios contributing a two-run single. Tampa Bay won 5-2 despite recording eight hits, and Cam Schlittler took the loss for New York that Monday.

New York Yankees erase two Game 3 deficits
Ben Rice singled against Nick Martinez during the third inning on October 7, sending Spencer Jones home and tying Game 3 at 1-1. New York responded after Tampa Bay opened the scoring at Yankee Stadium.
Anthony Volpe singled during the fourth before Jones doubled against Ian Seymour, pulling the Yankees level again at 2-2. The hosts finished with seven hits, more than their totals in either of the earlier division series contests.

Tampa Bay Rays take lead with two home runs
Ryan Vilade homered against Max Fried during the fourth inning of Game 3. Victor Mesa Jr. followed with a two-run drive in the sixth, breaking a 2-2 tie and giving Tampa Bay a 4-2 advantage.
Fried allowed four earned runs across 5 2/3 innings while striking out seven hitters. Mesa’s decisive homer came on the starter’s final pitch, ending his outing and securing Tampa Bay’s winning margin at Yankee Stadium.

Anthony Volpe’s home run overturned by replay
Anthony Volpe appeared to tie Game 3 with a two-run homer in the sixth inning. His drive against Griffin Jax reached the left-field wall with George Lombard Jr. on first base and two outs recorded.
Replay officials determined the batted ball would neither have cleared the wall nor been caught by left fielder Victor Mesa Jr. Volpe received an RBI double that scored Lombard, preserving Tampa Bay’s narrow 4-3 advantage.

Tampa Bay Rays rely on five rotation pitchers
Tampa Bay used all five members of its regular-season starting rotation during the three-game division series. Those pitchers recorded 68 of the 81 outs needed to complete the sweep of New York in October 2026.
Freddy Peralta and Ian Seymour covered 7 2/3 innings in Game 2. Nick Martinez, Seymour, and Griffin Jax combined for seven during the finale, while closer Bryan Baker secured three postseason saves, one per victory.

New York Yankees lineup changes fail
Manager Aaron Boone benched Jazz Chisholm Jr. for Game 3 and placed Trent Grisham first in the batting order. José Caballero also replaced Ryan McMahon at third base for the October 7 home elimination contest.
Grisham went hitless in five at-bats and recorded three strikeouts, including the final out. Chisholm entered and stole second base in the ninth as the tying run, but New York could not bring him home.
Fun fact: In 1996, 12-year-old Jeffrey Maier reached over Yankee Stadium’s fence, and Derek Jeter’s disputed fly ball counted as a home run. No replay review existed.

Giancarlo Stanton strikes out in eighth
Giancarlo Stanton entered Game 3 as an eighth-inning pinch hitter against Tampa Bay reliever Kevin Kelly. He struck out swinging in his only plate appearance, leaving New York without added offense in the 4-3 defeat.
Stanton had also struck out against closer Bryan Baker during the ninth inning of Game 1. Calf injuries limited his playing time after April 24, and both division series appearances came exclusively from the bench.

Aaron Judge misses Yankees division series
Aaron Judge was unavailable for the American League Division Series because of a right calf strain. The Yankees captain last played September 16 and missed all three postseason contests against Tampa Bay in October 2026.
Judge played only 66 regular-season games in 2026, batting .241 with 18 home runs and 41 RBIs. An earlier fractured rib kept the three-time American League MVP sidelined for approximately three months beginning in May.
Aroldis Chapman has built one of the most impressive strikeout totals ever recorded by an MLB reliever. Explore how far he leads the record and which pitchers are closest behind.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Trent Grisham are among New York’s potential free agents for 2027. Manager Boone remains under contract, while captain Judge has urged the organization to strengthen its roster as the offseason begins.
The Yankees’ championship drought reached 17 seasons after their 2009 World Series title. Tampa Bay became only the second opponent to sweep New York in a best-of-five postseason matchup, following Kansas City in October 1980.
The Yankees’ postseason exit raises questions about what changes the team needs, but stadium concerns are another issue facing several MLB clubs. Explore whether five teams have reached the point where building new ballparks makes sense.
Was the Yankees’ ALDS sweep mainly caused by their .130 batting average, Tampa Bay’s pitching, or questionable lineup decisions? Which factor mattered most? Make your case and share your thoughts in the comments below!
