Commanders’ biggest problem to fix during 2026 bye week appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Washington Commanders enter their 2026 bye week needing more than rest. At 1-4-1 following a 23-17 loss to San Francisco, Washington must repair the offensive line that keeps turning possessions into survival exercises.
Terry McLaurin’s season-ending knee injury makes that assignment more urgent. Without their established outside weapon, the Commanders cannot afford an offense that repeatedly asks Jayden Daniels to overcome penalties, pressure and obvious passing situations.
Dan Quinn has defensive problems to address, too. However, protection offers the clearest path toward stabilizing the season. Washington’s quarterback remains capable of generating enough offense to compete. The blocking must stop undermining him.

Washington’s offensive line is wasting winning opportunities
Daniels completed 29 of 40 passes for 300 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions against the 49ers. Those numbers should have positioned Washington for a meaningful road victory. Instead, four sacks and repeated blocking penalties helped leave the offense six points short.
The damage went beyond individual matchups. Washington’s line drew four holding or face-mask penalties and a false start, repeatedly disrupting the timing and field position necessary to sustain drives.
Josh Conerly Jr.’s first-quarter holding penalty erased a Daniels scramble before a punt. Lucas Patrick’s second-quarter hold pushed Washington backward, and a sack followed. Later, consecutive penalties involving Brandon Coleman and Conerly helped turn favorable field position into another punt.
Those sequences explain why this problem deserves priority. A holding penalty does not merely cost yardage. It changes the defense’s expectations, reduces the usefulness of play-action and exposes blockers to aggressive rushes in predictable passing situations.
The running game provided little relief. Washington averaged 3.1 yards per carry against San Francisco, leaving Daniels responsible for carrying an offense that struggled to stay balanced.
The quarterback also shares responsibility. An intentional-grounding penalty triggered a costly runoff during the final possession. Better protection cannot excuse every decision, but cleaner blocking would reduce the frequency of desperate late-game situations.
How Washington can rebuild protection during the break
Quinn’s staff should start with a detailed review separating technical failures from communication errors. A tackle losing outside leverage requires different coaching than two linemen misidentifying a pressure look. Treating every sack as the same mistake would produce incomplete solutions.
Washington should then establish clearer protection rules. Daniels, the center and the running backs need consistent answers against overloaded fronts, late movement and simulated pressure. The goal is eliminating free rushers without requiring complicated adjustments before every snap.
Play selection should help the blockers. More quick throws, defined reads and moving launch points can prevent opponents from attacking the same pocket repeatedly. Screens can also punish aggressive fronts, provided Washington executes the timing rather than treating them as automatic solutions.
With McLaurin unavailable, the offense should emphasize route combinations that create accessible completions instead of assuming receivers will consistently win isolated matchups downfield. That approach can keep Daniels decisive while reducing how long blockers must sustain protection.
The run game needs a smaller, dependable foundation. Coaches should identify the concepts their current personnel execute best, then build complementary passes from those looks. Consistency matters more than installing additional volume during a short break.
Finally, the staff must make accountability measurable. Track offensive-line penalties, unblocked pressures and possessions derailed by negative plays. Evaluate whether problems come from technique, assignments or personnel, then adjust responsibilities accordingly.
The bye week cannot manufacture elite blockers. It can produce a more organized offense that asks less of vulnerable matchups and rewards clean execution.
Washington does not need Daniels to become a different quarterback. It needs the players and coaches around him to give his existing ability a fair chance to matter.
