Mombasa United picked up their first-ever Kenyan Premier League (KPL) point after holding Kenya Police FC to a goalless draw at Mbaraki Sports Ground in Mombasa.
The visitors started brightly, creating early opportunities
through striker Yves Koitima, who failed to convert two chances following
combinations with veteran forward Elvis Rupia.
Mombasa United gradually grew into the game after the 25th
minute, enjoying spells of possession but struggling to test Police FC
goalkeeper Job Ochieng.
In the 28th minute, Edward Omondi cleared the ball off the
goal line following a dangerous long throw from the hosts, before Mombasa
United captain Hakimu Msami sent the rebound over the crossbar.
The evenly contested encounter went into the break with both
sides unable to find the back of the net.
Six minutes into the second half, Police FC wasted another
golden opportunity when Koitima failed to connect with Edward Omondi's powerful
cross from close range.
Mombasa United responded with increased attacking intent,
but Jackson Watee missed a chance to put the hosts ahead 15 minutes into the
second half after his effort drifted wide.
Watee had another opportunity to snatch victory for Mombasa
United with the final kick of the match after finding himself one-on-one with
Police FC goalkeeper Job Ochieng. However, Police defenders intervened to block
his effort, with the resulting corner failing to produce a breakthrough.
The stalemate leaves both Mombasa United and Kenya Police FC
still searching for their first victories after three rounds of league action.
Speaking after the match, Mombasa United head coach
Abdulhamid Moallin praised his players' performance but admitted that poor
finishing cost them all three points.
“Our boys played very well, especially in the first half. In
the second half, we created many chances but failed to capitalise. We were not
clinical in the box. It is a work in progress, so I believe the goals will come
soon,” said Moallin.
His Kenya Police FC counterpart, Anthony Akhulia,
acknowledged the challenge posed by the hosts, noting that his side had
travelled to Mombasa targeting maximum points.
“We came knowing it would not be an easy match, considering
that Mombasa United had not won any match, just like us. We came here to win,
but unfortunately, it did not work out,” said Akhulia.
