Streamer IShowSpeed is partnering with Barack and Michelle Obama to bring the documentary The Eyes of Ghana to US theatres for one night on October 28.
The film will screen in 10 cities, including Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Washington, DC. The collaboration aims to bring the documentary’s story to wider American audiences.
The Eyes of Ghana follows Chris Hesse, a Ghanaian cinematographer working to preserve more than 1,000 films. These recordings document Africa’s independence movements during the 1950s and 1960s. Hesse is trying to save the historic footage as his eyesight continues to decline.
IShowSpeed, whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr, said he felt honoured to support the project. He described Hesse’s work as an important record of African independence and praised his efforts to protect the footage for future generations.

The streamer also spoke about his connection with Ghana after visiting the country during his Speed Does Africa tour earlier this year. His visit attracted positive attention, and Ghana later granted him citizenship. Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the decision and encouraged him to continue promoting Ghana and Africa.
IShowSpeed has more than 200 million followers across social media platforms. He became widely known for his energetic livestreams and online content. He also appeared on TIME magazine’s inaugural TIME100 Creators list in 2025.
The theatrical release comes as online creators expand their presence in filmmaking and cinema distribution. YouTube creator Markiplier released the horror film Iron Lung earlier this year, earning $50 million worldwide against a reported $3 million budget. Other creators, including Kane Parsons and Curry Barker, also brought The Backrooms and Obsession to cinemas. Their films reflect the growing reach of internet creators beyond digital platforms.
