Two soldiers of the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) sustained gunshot wounds in an early-morning attack on a military outpost in Mundri West County, Western Equatoria State, according to the army spokesperson.
Major General Lul Ruai said government forces repelled the attack at the Bari military outpost in Kotobi Payam, forcing the assailants to flee.
Speaking to Eye Radio, Ruai attributed the attack to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army-in-Opposition (SPLA-IO) and said government forces remained in control of the position.
“I would like to confirm to listeners of Eye Radio that there was an attack at the Bari military outpost in Kotobi Payam, Mundri West County, in Western Equatoria State,” Ruai said.
He added that the attack occurred in the early hours of the morning, leaving two servicemen wounded.
“As a result, two servicemen sustained gunshot wounds. The attackers fled back, and our forces are still in touch,” he said.
Ruai described Bari as a small military outpost rather than a major military barracks, disputing claims that opposition forces had captured the position.
“It’s a small outpost. It’s not a major military barracks,” he said.
His remarks followed a statement issued by the SPLA-IO on Monday morning claiming that its forces had taken control of Bari Centre in Kotobi Payam, Mundri West County.
The conflicting accounts leave questions about the circumstances of the attack and the current security situation in the area.
The claims by the two sides have not been independently verified.
