Liverpool in Driving Seat for Alex Scott? Latest on £100m Midfielder, Szoboszlai Injury and Giovanni Leoni Return
Liverpool’s midfield planning is back under the spotlight, with fresh claims that Bournemouth have softened their position on Alex Scott and now believe the Merseyside club are in the “driving seat” for the highly rated midfielder.
According to the Daily Mail, Bournemouth would consider a January sale if the conditions are right, and crucially, if a £100m offer arrives. That is a significant development around one of England’s most talented young midfielders, especially with Liverpool known to be monitoring options in that department.
The report arrives at a time when Liverpool are juggling several important issues, from Dominik Szoboszlai’s fitness to Giovanni Leoni’s long-awaited return, while youth prospects continue to push for attention behind the scenes. Taken together, it paints the picture of a club assessing immediate needs and long-term succession in equal measure.
Alex Scott transfer latest as Bournemouth shift stance
The headline development is Bournemouth’s apparent willingness to listen to offers for Scott in January, having previously issued firm hands-off messages regarding a cluster of their most valuable assets. The Daily Mail reports that those internal discussions have moved on, and that the Cherries have now “privately conceded they would cash in on Scott mid-season if certain conditions were met”.
Those conditions matter. Bournemouth would want their Premier League position to look secure, and they would want a fee of £100m. That valuation is eye-catching, particularly when set against the context that Chelsea were previously described as the most active club in pursuit and had bids that went “reaching a high of around £68million in the summer”.
Liverpool’s interest is described as genuine, and the report adds that Bournemouth figures believe Liverpool are “serious in the chase, in the driving seat in fact, thanks to the Iraola link.” That detail is important. Andoni Iraola has only recently taken over as Liverpool head coach, and any existing knowledge of Scott’s game, personality and tactical suitability would inevitably carry weight in recruitment discussions.
There is, however, a layer of caution around the situation. It is also noted that “it would be a surprise if Liverpool were to act in the winter transfer window”. That assessment feels fair. January is a notoriously difficult market for elite clubs looking for premium talent at sensible prices. If Bournemouth are actively seeking to stimulate competition, Liverpool will be fully aware of the possibility that their interest is being used to drive numbers upward.
Even so, Scott’s profile fits. He is young, technically polished, Premier League-tested and capable of growing within a top-level environment. The Daily Mail notes that he “excelled on England duty in the recent international break before suffering a muscle injury”. Liverpool’s recruitment model has often leaned towards players who can contribute now and improve further over time, and Scott falls into that category.
What complicates matters is the contract situation referenced in the report. It remains to be seen whether Liverpool would commit £100m for “a player whose contract would only have 18 months remaining in January.” Clubs at the very top may pay premium prices, but they still look for leverage. If that deal is to move, Liverpool would likely want a structure and valuation that better reflect the contractual reality.
The same report adds context around Liverpool’s broader midfield thinking, stating that “with no new contract currently on the table for Alexis Mac Allister and no midfield signings since 2023, Liverpool will look to strengthen that area of the pitch in the next 12 months or so.” It also mentions Monaco’s Lamine Camara as another admired option. In other words, Scott may be a live target, but he is part of a wider picture rather than the only name under consideration.
Dominik Szoboszlai injury fears eased
There has also been movement on the fitness front, with concern around Dominik Szoboszlai seemingly reduced after suggestions in Hungary that his hamstring issue could be more serious than first thought.
The midfielder has missed Liverpool’s last two matches, including the 3-0 loss to Manchester City, and was absent from the squad against LASK despite travelling with the team. That naturally prompted speculation, especially after earlier descriptions of the issue as an “overload” sustained on international duty.
Yet the latest indications are more reassuring. The Daily Mail states that “sources close to the vice-captain have played down any fears of the issue being a more serious problem.” It then adds another encouraging line, noting that Szoboszlai himself, when asked about a possible return, said: “we will see”.
That is not a firm timeline, but it is far from an alarming message. The expectation now is that he will at least have the chance to be involved in the squad for the trip to Brentford. For Liverpool, that would be timely. Szoboszlai’s energy, line-breaking running and intensity without the ball remain valuable, particularly in away matches where control can fluctuate and transitions become important.
From Liverpool’s perspective, caution will continue to guide the process. Soft-tissue issues are managed carefully for good reason, and with a demanding schedule there is little sense in forcing a return before the player is fully ready. The key point is that the more dramatic external noise appears not to match the current internal understanding.
Our View
From a hopeful Liverpool fan’s perspective, the Alex Scott story feels credible enough to take seriously, even if £100m sounds very steep. He is clearly talented, he suits the modern Premier League game, and if Andoni Iraola knows exactly how to use him, that gives Liverpool an obvious edge in any planning discussion. If Bournemouth really think Liverpool are in the “driving seat”, then supporters will naturally start imagining what that midfield could look like over the next few years.
The price is the sticking point. Liverpool fans will want quality, but they will also expect the club to stay disciplined. Paying £100m for a player with 18 months left on his deal would be a huge call, and one that would need total conviction from the recruitment team and head coach. If the valuation drops, or if the structure becomes favourable, then the mood around a move would change quickly.
On Szoboszlai, the biggest positive is that the issue does not appear severe. Liverpool need his legs and aggression back soon, and hearing that fears have been played down is encouraging. As for Leoni, patience is everything. Supporters always want to see new signings involved, but after such a serious injury the only sensible approach is a careful one. If Liverpool can get him back fully fit, it will feel like a new option arriving all over again.
