African University of Science and Technology
Azikiwe Onwualu, the vice-chancellor of the African University of Science and Technology, says the institution has been selected to host a five-megawatt solar project on campus.
Mr Onwualu said this at the 43rd National Solar Energy Forum and induction of new fellows organised by the Solar Energy Society of Nigeria on Wednesday in Abuja. According to him, the African Development Bank is funding the project, and the Rural Electrification Agency is implementing it.
He said that energy remained the single biggest challenge facing businesses and academic institutions across the country.
Mr Onwualu spoke on institutional clean-energy integration efforts, noting that AUST transitioned its hostels to solar power.
Mustafa Abdullahi, the director-general of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, said that solar energy would remain a vital component of Nigeria’s pathway to net-zero emissions by 2060.
Mr Abdullahi said the commission was actively translating transition policies into tangible actions using integrated planning instruments such as the Nigeria Energy and Emission Calculator 2060.
