Ferrari $RACE CEO Benedetto Vigna applauded Tesla $TSLA's Roadster presentation on Tuesday, saying it demonstrated that carmakers can still make bold creative leaps even in a well-established industry, according to Reuters.
In an interview at an automotive conference organized by Italian magazine Quattroruote, Vigna gave the launch a perfect 10 out of 10 in both technology and presentation, according to Reuters.
"It certainly shows that also in the automotive world there's still a lot to be done. We have to keep dreaming," Vigna said. "As a European, thank you for showing us how that, even in an old world, you can still innovate and dare."
Vigna joined by video link from India, where Ferrari was holding an event for customers. He said enthusiasm for the Italian marque remained high, according to Reuters.
Vigna said taking chances is essential and that input from outsiders was crucial to Ferrari's Luce, the automaker's first all-electric model. Former Apple $AAPL design chief Jony Ive and his LoveFrom studio collaborated on the car.
"If we had worked on our own, we wouldn't have done what we did. In other words, we tackled a whole series of questions and came up with some answers prompted by people who were observing us from the outside," Vigna said.
Tesla revealed the next-generation Roadster at an event last week, and CEO Elon Musk said production would begin in 2028. In the demonstration, the car vaulted over five other Tesla cars with a spin in midair. Tesla's timer showed it going from 0 to 60 mph in under one second. Tesla gave no price for the car.
The Roadster has been delayed repeatedly since Tesla first showed it in 2017 with a 2020 production target. Tesla stock rose in the first reaction to the unveiling.
Ferrari has doubters to persuade as well. Its stock dropped as much as 7.8% in Milan in May after the Luce unveiling. Ferrari priced the Luce at €550,000 and expects to begin deliveries before the end of 2026.
