Myth: The best art schools in the UK are all in London.
Fact: The best art schools are the ones that give you top-tier creative training and a great experience, no matter their location.
Norwich University of the Arts, one of the UK’s leading arts universities, shows how creative education connects students with different communities, encourages collaboration and brings fresh thinking to real-world challenges. Illustration students recently collaborated with author Tuaila Milanca to bring stories of her childhood in Guinea-Bissau to life. While lecturer Andy Judd’s “Bold Voices” project brought students, technicians and lecturers together to create a music video celebrating identity and self-expression.
This is why The Sunday Times Good University Guide named Norwich University the 2027 Specialist University of the Year. It’s as much a recognition of its outstanding performance for excellent teaching as how it develops the curious, ambitious, brave, and distinctive. This is a place that is proud of what it does and where students are proud to call home.

One of the UK’s leading specialist creative education providers
Having earned a Triple Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework — gold for student experience, student outcomes, and overall — Norwich University proves that the UK’s best artists don’t just come from London.
Big ideas blossom out of intimate learning spaces, the kind where the lecturers know your name and work with you personally. The kind where you’ll find a community of students from different walks of life and fit right in from your first few months.
“The course provides us with amazing support from both lecturers and technicians, who are so approachable and have great industry knowledge,” says Lucy, a BA (Hons) in Fashion student from China.
You won’t just find Lucy and her peers in lecture halls alone. They spend most of their time in studios, media labs, and creative spaces across 13 buildings that sit among Norwich’s cultural quarter. “Our campus is full of creativity and experimental fun stuff, including the great facilities and opportunities to explore other parts of the creative industry, such as 3D work and photography.”
From September 2027, students can access benefits from two creative specialists through a newly announced partnership between Norwich University of the Arts and the Royal College of Art, ranked number one in the world for art and design for 12 consecutive years (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2015–2026).
This future-defining partnership enables students to enrol on a range of undergraduate degrees jointly awarded by the RCA and Norwich University. Under the plan, students will learn in Norwich while drawing on the RCA’s deep expertise through enhancement activities, masterclasses and RCA visits that are built straight into the curriculum to enrich the everyday student experience.

Where international students feel right at home
The Sunday Times crowned Norwich the UK’s Best Place to Live in 2026. Before this, it was already known as one of Britain’s greenest, safest, and most vibrant cities. So yes, it’s all here in Norwich – and without the crushing price tag often associated with other big UK cities.
“Norwich is a wonderful city packed with creativity and Gothic architecture, with beautiful independent shops, markets, pubs, and much more to explore,” says Shrey, an Indian student pursuing the BA (Hons) Games Art and Design course.
If you’re the kind of person who likes a little bit of everything — nature, shopping, foods from all corners of the globe, can’t-miss festivals — Norwich ticks off each box. You have access to the city, where festivals like Pride celebrations run through the streets, and the roads brim with street food markets and local cafés.
It’s an artist’s playground too, home to acclaimed galleries like the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts and stage plays at the Theatre Royal. If you’d like to get away from city life, the Norfolk countryside and coast are just around the corner.
For weekend getaways, or if you’d like to explore beyond the UK, you’ve got easy access. You can travel to London in under two hours by train or visit countries worldwide via Norwich International Airport, which offers connections through Amsterdam.
