Namibian netball captain Cornelia Mupenda has signed a two-year contract with Australian club Peninsula Waves and will join the team for the 2027 season.
The club expressed excitement over securing Mupenda, describing her as a proven winner, international leader and defensive powerhouse.
Mupenda enjoyed an outstanding 2026 season, claiming three championship titles, earning two Player of the Match awards in Varsity Netball and being named Best Defender at the Africa Netball Cup.
She is set to compete in Australia’s Victorian Netball League (VNL).
Mupenda said she was grateful for the opportunity, describing playing netball in Australia as one of her biggest dreams.
“Playing netball in Australia has always been one of my biggest dreams, and seeing it become a reality is truly a blessing. I give all glory to God for opening this door,” she
said. She added that the move would help her grow as an athlete, challenge herself in a competitive environment, gain international exposure, and further develop her skills.
Mupenda also hopes her move will
inspire young Namibian netball players to pursue opportunities beyond the country’s borders. “I also believe this opportunity opens doors for other young Namibian netball players to dream bigger and realise that our talent can take us beyond our borders,” she said.
She said she looked forward to
representing Namibia with pride and making the most of the opportunity.
Her teammate Mwale Mulenamaswe
said, “I am beyond proud and happy for my sister. This is huge for her, the Debmarine Desert Jewels and Namibia as a whole. It shows we belong on bigger stages and that our talent deserves international recognition. It is beautiful to see us taking up space and opening doors for others.”
“This move also paves the way for fellow Namibian players, as more people will be watching and hopefully scouting our talent for international opportunities.
It is bigger than one player; it is an opportunity for all of us to dream bigger
and show the world what Namibia has to offer.”
