Dubai: Just parked your car? Before you decide to lock your car and walk away, always look around to make sure whether you are using a paid parking slot.
Public parking in Dubai can often be paid, and the cost of your ticket can vary depending not just on which zone you have parked in, but also, the time of day and the area you are in.
Parkin, the main public parking provider in Dubai, applies variable parking rates across the emirate, and here is all you need to know about when and how much you may have to pay, and the different options to pay for parking in Dubai.
When does paid parking apply?
Paid parking in public parking areas managed by Parkin applies as follows:
- Monday to Saturday, 8am to 10pm
However, certain zones may operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and have different charging schedules.
This information is clearly stated on the paid parking sign boards, so it is advisable to always check the board before leaving your car parked, instead of assuming that parking would be free after 10pm.
Factors that can affect your parking ticket amount
1. Peak hours vs off-peak hours
Parkin applies variable parking charges, with peak hour charges being slightly higher than off-peak timing charges, to maintain traffic flow and optimise parking management.
For public parking zones with variable tariffs:
- Peak hours: 8am to 10am and 4pm to 8pm.
- Non-peak hours: 10am to 4pm and 8pm to 10pm.
- Standard vs Premium Zone
Another factor that can affect the parking charge is which zone you are in – standard or premium. An easy way to identify standard zones is that the parking zone code will end with the regular A, B, C or D. Premium parking zones, on the other hand, will have codes that have a ‘P’ along with the standard A, B, C or D. So, if you see a zone which has a parking code ending with AP, BP, CP or DP, then you are in a premium parking zone.
2. Multistorey or special parking zones
Another factor that can influence the parking charges are special parking zones like Jumeiral Lake Towers (Parking code J,K and L), where parking can cost AED10.50 per hour, multistorey car parks, which charge around AED 5 per hour, or paid parking at malls like City Centre Deira or Mall of Emirates, which are also managed by Parkin. At these malls, the first three or four hours are free to park, with charges applying after that.
How much does the parking cost?
Standard parking: At standard parking zones, the ticket can cost between Dh2.10 and Dh4.20 per hour. This is the expected range you would need to pay, whether you are parking during peak hours or off-peak hours.
Premium parking: Premium public parking costs start from Dh2.10 to Dh4.20 during off-peak hours, and can go up to Dh6.30 per hour during peak hours, depending on the parking zone.
Free Parking
Parking is free:
- every day from 10pm to 8am every day,
- on Sundays, and
- on public holidays.
How to pay for parking
You can pay for parking through various options:
- Parkin app – available for Apple and Android devices, where you can top up your Parkin wallet using your UAE bank card, or pay directly for the specific ticket using your credit or debit card. Because the app requires you to log in using your RTA account or your UAE PASS, it already has your car details updated. In case you need to pay for a car not registered under your name, you can also do so, by choosing the option to ‘add vehicle’.
- Whatsapp – All you need to do is add ‘+971 58 800 9090’ to your contact list and send a message in the format: . However, it is important to note that this service requires you to have an active and topped up mParking account with RTA.
- SMS – Send an SMS to 7275 with the same format. Additional SMS charges of 30fils will apply.
- Parking machines – Use coins or nol card to pay at the parking machines around paid parking zones.
- App clips – The paid parking signboards have a QR code, which allows you to scan the service code for the specific parking zone, enter your car details and pay using Apple Pay.
