The Kansas City Chiefs maintained their perfect start to the season with a commanding victory over the Los Angeles Chargers, but without a doubt one of the most striking scenes of the night happened far from the action.
Chris Jones was involved in a tense exchange with defensive line coach Joe Cullen during the second quarter of the game. Cameras caught the moment, and the argument quickly went viral.
What happened between Chris Jones and Joe Cullen?
The scene occurred when Kansas City was leading 9-3. Jones was sitting on the bench when Cullen approached to speak with him and placed a hand on his shoulder. The defender reacted by brushing it away, and the two began to argue heatedly. CBS reporter Melanie Collins later described the episode as a "screaming match" ("pelea a gritos").
The broadcast did not reveal what Jones and Cullen said to each other or what exactly caused the argument.

Collins noted that frustrations were growing within Kansas City's defense, but did not link the confrontation to a specific cause.
Former Chiefs quarterback and current CBS analyst Trent Green offered his own interpretation. According to Green, Jones and Cullen have a good relationship and the player may have reacted to the coach's contact when he placed his hand on his shoulder. That explanation, however, was not confirmed by Jones, Cullen, or the Chiefs.
The moment also came after a quiet start to the season for Jones in terms of production. The seven-time Pro Bowler had entered the game without recording any sacks in his first four outings. Against the Chargers, he finally got his first sack of the season, although it was shared with rookie Peter Woods.
And the defense ended up responding. Kansas City recorded four sacks on Justin Herbert and held the Chargers to just six points all night.
The Chiefs responded on the field
The argument did not prevent Kansas City from controlling the game. The Chiefs defeated the Chargers 22-6 at Arrowhead Stadium and improved their record to 5-0, while Los Angeles fell to 0-6.
Steve Spagnuolo's defense had one of its best performances of the season. Herbert found few options for much of the game and Kansas City managed to hold on to the lead until the end.
For Jones, moreover, the night ended with a small personal vindication. After four games without sacks, he showed up on the defensive stat sheet again with a shared sack with Woods. The incident with Cullen, which took place a few hours earlier, thus remained one of the most striking images of a day that ended with a victory for the Chiefs.
