Bandits have killed a driver and two other persons in an attack on a vehicle along the Marnona-Isa Road in Sokoto State.
The attack occurred at Kunawa village in Goronyo Local Government Area on Wednesday evening.
The spokesperson for the Sokoto State Police Command, DSP Ahmed Rufai, confirmed the incident to our correspondent, saying three people were killed.
“A driver and two others were killed by bandits at Kunawa village, Goronyo Local Government Area, along Marnona-Isa Road,” Rufai said.
The victims were reportedly travelling from Sokoto metropolis towards Isa Local Government Area when armed men intercepted their vehicle and opened fire on them.
Although the exact circumstances surrounding the attack remained unclear, reports indicated that some of the passengers might have been among the 3,000 people recruited by the Sokoto State Government who had been invited for further screening and collection of their documents.
However, it could not be independently established whether any of the deceased were among the recruits.
As of the time of filing this report, the police had yet to provide further details about the attack, including the identities of the victims and whether any arrests had been made.
The incident has renewed concerns over the safety of travellers on roads connecting communities in Sokoto State, where armed banditry continues to pose a security challenge.
The killing has also raised fresh questions about the protection of commuters, particularly those travelling between remote communities and major towns for official engagements.
Residents have repeatedly called for stronger security measures to protect road users and prevent attacks by armed groups.
Further details on the incident were being awaited from the police.
