8 New TV Shows to Watch This Weekend on Netflix, HBO, and Hulu (October 23-25)

Happy weekend! It’s a slow week for TV releases. Over the past month, shows like Carrie, Crystal Lake, and VisionQuest dropped, keeping many viewers busy. But things are picking up soon. In the coming months, we’ll have the return of the final season of Yellowjackets, the third season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and more.

In the meantime, we have some shows to recommend. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is back with its second season, bringing viewers back to Night City, which looks just as incredible as it did the first time around. The romantic comedy Nobody Wants This continues to explore the romance between Joanne and Noah, who’ve just moved in together.

There are also various offerings for genre fans. Yaga, a Canadian series starring Heated Rivalry’s overnight star Hudson Williams, is inspired by the legend of Baba Yaga (but is unrelated to John Wick). Lupin returns with its fourth season, continuing the story of a charismatic con artist. Orphan Black is streaming in full on HBO Max, making it the perfect opportunity for it to reach a wider audience.

Other noteworthy shows include Phony, a comedy-mystery following a mother and son with a co-dependent relationship, and the second season of Chris Pratt’s The Terminal List. Happy watching.

1 Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

• Available on Netflix
• Genre: Anime
• Episode count: 10
• Cast: Kentaro Tone, Koki Uchiyama, Momoka Terasawa

Set in the world of the Cyberpunk 2077 video game, Edgerunners is back with a second season, following a whole new cast of characters whose lives intersect in Night City. Some of this season’s storylines include an edgerunner past his prime on a path to redemption, a teenager who wants to rebel from her Corpo family, and a cinephile trying to preserve traditional movie-making in a world where the art form has become obsolete.

Per our Polygon review:

Across 10 episodes, director Kai Ikarashi and the teams at CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger deliver another spectacular collision of corporate cruelty, dangerous technology, and people pushing themselves past their limits. The ingredients are familiar, sometimes a little too much. But an extraordinary ensemble and the relationships that develop among its members make this return to Night City richer, more rewarding, and downright better.

2 Nobody Wants This

• Available on Netflix
• Genre: Romance
• Episode count: 10
• Cast: Kristen Bell, Adam Brody, Justine Lupe

Nobody Wants This has become one of Netflix’s biggest recent hits, capitalizing on Millennials’ nostalgia from two of their great teen icons: Kristen Bell and Adam Brody. The pair play Joanne, a sex podcaster, and Noah, a rabbi, who fall in love despite their different backgrounds and interests. The third season finds their relationship in its most serious moment yet, with the two moving in and Joanne considering converting to Judaism.

3 Yaga

• Available on AMC+
• Genre: Thriller
• Episode count: 8
• Cast: Hudson Williams, Carrie-Anne Moss, Noah Reid

Yaga is based on a stage play, which is, in turn, based on the Slavic myth of Baba Yaga. The series begins with a detective (Noah Reid) investigating the disappearance of Henry Park (Hudson Williams), the heir to a powerful fishery. The investigation leads to an encounter with a university professor (Carrie-Anne Moss) with an interest in younger men.

4 Lupin

• Available on Netflix
• Genre: Crime
• Episode count: 8
• Cast: Omar Sy, Ludivine Sagnier, Shirine Boutella

Lupin is back with a fourth season. The hit Netflix series follows Assane Diop, a con artist who draws inspiration for his crimes from the fictional character and master of disguise Arsène Lupin. The season picks up four years after season three, with Diop newly released from prison, ready to leave his life of crime behind.

5 The Terminal List

• Available on Prime Video
• Genre: Action
• Episode count: 8
• Cast: Chris Pratt, Constance Wu, Jared Shaw

Chris Pratt is back with more action in The Terminal List, which follows James Reece, a Navy SEAL who was ambushed on a mission in Afghanistan and got his revenge on those who were guilty. The second season drags Reece into an even larger conspiracy, taking him to different parts of the world, this time as a CIA operative.

6 Phony

• Available on Hulu
• Genre: Comedy-mystery
• Episode count: 8
• Cast: Sam Nivola, Connie Britton, Mahaela Park

Phony follows high school student Sonny (Sam Nivola) and his mom, Ellen (Connie Britton), who have an unusually close relationship. After a car crash, Sonny wakes up from a coma and grows convinced that his mother has been replaced by an identical impostor, with no one believing him.

7 Newlyweds

• Available on Peacock
• Genre: Comedy
• Episode count: 13
• Cast: Tea Leoni, Tim Daly, Jamie Lee Curtis

Newlyweds sounds like a show from a different era, following a newly married couple, made up of a free-spirited woman and a buttoned-up guy, and how they balance their relationship and contrasting personalities. The show is a sitcom, with each episode recorded in front of a live audience.

8 Orphan Black

• Available on HBO Max
• Genre: Sci-fi
• Episode count: 50 episodes total
• Cast: Tatiana Maslany, Jordan Gavaris, Evelyne Brochu

Orphan Black is now on HBO Max, introducing the series to a wider audience. Led by Tatiana Maslany, the series follows Sarah Manning, an ex-con who returns home to reunite with her family, including her daughter, her adoptive brother, and adoptive mother. Sarah's plans for a peaceful life are quickly disrupted when she witnesses a woman jumping onto the train tracks. As if that wasn’t horrifying enough, the woman looks just like her.

Per our Polygon recommendation:

Underneath a complicated conspiracy plot that involves scary corporations, mad scientists, awful tests on human subjects, and dozens of clones, the series features one of the best performances of all time. Through her years in the show, Tatiana Maslany went from an unknown Canadian actress to an Emmy winner, playing 17 distinct clones across five seasons. More than a decade later, while some of the series’ special effects have aged, the scenes of Maslany’s clones speaking, yelling, hugging, and dancing with each other feel as magical and unique as they did when they first aired, luring you into believing that there really are multiple women onscreen.
