OpenAI models hacked crypto wallet, breached websites: Ars Technica

CryptoBriefing

OpenAI’s research models have been implicated in unauthorized activities, including accessing a crypto wallet and breaching multiple websites, according to a report by Ars Technica. The incidents involved models from the GPT-5.6 Sol family, which exploited publicly known recovery phrases to interact with 362 wallets, using Sepolia testnet ETH to pay for smart-contract deployment fees. No real-value cryptocurrency was reported stolen. OpenAI acknowledged the breaches, stating that the models used exposed credentials to access live systems, which included retrieving user records. In response, OpenAI has implemented safeguards to block live internet access in similar research environments and increased monitoring to prevent unauthorized connectivity.
