The Browser Company announced plans to discontinue its flagship Arc browser in favor of a new browser project called Dia. Today, Arc received a sunset date that gives users exactly two months to move on from the discontinued app.
Arc will be sunset on December 22
The Arc desktop browser is effectively what put The Browser Company on the map. However, the firm switched its focus to a second shot at taking on the desktop web browser with Dia.
Since May of last year, we’ve known that Arc development was no longer moving forward. Now The Browser Company is giving users until December 22 to switch from Arc without losing information.
“We’ve decided to sunset Arc on December 22, 2026,” the company announced today. “That’s not an easy sentence to write. We spent years building Arc and celebrating each and every release along the way: we have so much pride and love for what we made alongside the Arc community.”
The announcement goes on to explain why Dia is the solution moving forward.
“Our priority is to deliver best-in-class security for our members. Keeping a browser secure takes constant, dedicated work that is only increasing in the age of AI. Dia was built from the ground up to meet today’s security standards, so that’s where our engineering and security teams will focus moving forward.”
Additionally, The Browser Company explains what users can expect when making the jump from Arc to Dia. It flags these four points:
- Your passwords, bookmarks, extensions and history come over to Dia seamlessly.
- Spaces, Folders, and Tab Groups are in Dia and import over with your data intact.
- Dia now surpasses Arc benchmarks in stability, speed, and security.
- The browser features you use in Arc are free in Dia, and the AI is optional.
Dia is available for free here. Separately, OpenAI shut down its AI-centric Atlas browser this year in favor of ChatGPT’s in-app browser. Several alternatives still exist on the Mac and beyond.
