Anthropic has announced a new Public Benefit Fund, committing 5% of the company’s shares to support projects intended to benefit society.
The fund will operate as a wholly owned entity within Anthropic. The company said the structure will give it greater flexibility and scale when supporting public-benefit initiatives.
Anthropic could also contribute an additional 2% of its shares for every 50% increase in the company’s value.
Fund Could Support Nonprofits and Direct Payments
Anthropic has not yet decided exactly how the fund will spend its resources.
However, the company said it could use the funds for large donations to traditional nonprofit organizations and direct distributions to specific populations.
The fund is designed to give Anthropic flexibility to pursue different approaches as the effects of artificial intelligence become clearer.
Anthropic Is Already Studying AI’s Impact on Jobs
The company has already committed $200 million to research the impact of AI on the economy and job market.
However, Anthropic said faster AI development may require more ambitious measures.
“Given the pace of AI progress, bolder approaches may be needed,” the company said, adding that the new fund will have the flexibility to pursue them.
Announcement Comes Amid Growing AI Distrust
The move comes as public sentiment toward the broader AI industry grows increasingly negative.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei previously described the backlash against AI as “fundamentally a crisis of trust.”
Anthropic has not yet revealed who will decide which projects receive support from the Public Benefit Fund.
The company said it will provide more information about the fund’s structure and governance in the coming months.
