President Donald Trump’s caption-less post of Sophie Cunningham’s iconic pointing pose on his personal social media has stirred up a debate.
Cunningham might be a free agent in the WNBA, but she took a clear side when it comes to political debates with her stance against trans athletes competing in women’s sports.
Cunningham’s take sparked protests in her favour as well as against her, with President Trump speaking favourably about the 30-year-old WNBA player. It seems his support of her continues to grow.
Donald Trump’s post about Sophie Cunningham goes viral
President Trump posted a picture of Cunningham’s iconic point pose without a caption on Truth Social, with the White House’s official account reposting the same on X for a bigger audience.
Fans were split, with many being supportive of Trump’s approval of Cunningham, while others seemed upset about Cunningham’s growing political connections.
“When you see the President of the United States post a meme about you,” joked one fan with an AI-edited picture of Cunningham.
“I just want you to stop posting odd —-,” said one fan who was upset about this context-less post.
“You can love Sophie Cunningham or hate her, one thing is for certain… SHE IS NOT GOING ANYWHERE ANYTIME SOON!!!! THE WOMAN IS A SUPERSTAR!!!!” said one Cunningham superfan.
“Averages 8 points a game. Kind of like 28% approval,” joked another fan, drawing parallels between Cunningham’s on-court underperformance and the President’s alleged approval rating.
“This should go over well LOL,” said a fan, aware of the political discourse it might cause.
The iconic Cunningham pointing pose comes from a June 2026 game between the Fever and Phoenix Mercury, as Cunningham stepped up as the enforcer for Caitlin Clark after a rough DeWanna Bonner foul.
The pose is considered iconic for many, as it shows Cunningham will stand up fervently for whatever she believes in. The pose has also been co-opted politically by her supporters, which explains why Trump used it.
