Dog owners are being urged to watch for signs of a potentially deadly virus after canine parvovirus was detected in Balcatta and surrounding suburbs.
Karrinyup Small Animal Hospital issued a warning on Facebook on Tuesday about the “highly contagious” virus and introduced precautions to protect animals visiting the clinic.
Vets will assess dogs and conduct testing outside the hospital while wearing full personal protective equipment.
“Please do not enter the clinic or get out of your car until your dog has been tested for parvovirus and returned a negative result,” the post said.
“Our vets will come out to your car wearing full PPE to assess your dog and carry out testing.
“This precaution helps protect other patients and prevent the potential spread of this serious virus.”
Owners whose dogs show symptoms including lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting and diarrhoea have been asked to call the clinic before arriving.
“If your dog is lacking energy or appetite, has vomiting and/or diarrhoea and you have an appointment at Karrinyup Small Animal Hospital, please ring us to notify of your arrival while remaining in your car with your dog,” the post said.
Canine parvovirus attacks a dog’s gastrointestinal tract and immune system, causing severe vomiting, diarrhoea and dehydration.
Puppies and unvaccinated dogs are particularly vulnerable to the virus, which can spread through contact with infected dogs, their faeces and contaminated surfaces.
It can also survive in the environment for extended periods, making it difficult to eliminate.
Owners unsure whether their dog’s vaccinations are up to date can contact the hospital by phone or email.
About 20,000 cases of canine parvovirus are reported in Australia each year.
Cases were also confirmed at Wanneroo Animal Care Centre in late September.
