The New York Knicks celebrated their first NBA championship in 53 years on Tuesday night, receiving their rings and raising a banner at Madison Square Garden before their season opener against the Philadelphia 76ers. Naturally, lifelong Knicks fan Tracy Morgan was part of the festivities.
But the comedian also found time to take a shot at a player who wasn’t even in the building. During NBC’s coverage of the celebration, Morgan roasted Los Angeles Lakers guard Bronny James, suggesting that he looks more like a junior college player than an NBA one.
Bronny’s Rough Preseason
Morgan’s jab came at a tough time for Bronny, who is entering his third season with the Lakers after being selected No. 55 overall in the 2024 NBA Draft.
The 22-year-old struggled throughout the preseason, scoring just 11 points on 26.7% shooting across four games. He also went just 1-of-7 from 3-point range with 12 turnovers in nearly 70 minutes of action.
Lakers head coach JJ Redick even admitted that Bronny “didn’t play well” during the preseason.
“I thought he had a really nice September and a good summer with us, but I don’t think he’s played well in the four preseason games. But he’s had good practices,” Redick said.
Despite these struggles, Bronny did still earn a roster spot with the team.
‘JUCO ball written all over him’
While the night was more about the Knicks and their ring ceremony, Morgan couldn’t help but take a shot at Bronny.
“Bronny look like he got JUCO ball written all over him,” Morgan said in a clip shared on X.
The clip quickly went viral on social media, racking up nearly 200,000 views in a matter of hours.
To make matters worse, LeBron James signed with the 76ers this summer, meaning he was in the building on Tuesday night as Morgan took aim at his son.
There’s no word on whether LeBron caught wind of Morgan’s comments before tipoff. Either way, the Lakers will open their season against the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday night, giving Bronny a chance to respond on the court.
