The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has described the APC-led government as “incompetent and corrupt,” accusing it of failing to learn from countries that have made progress in reducing poverty.
In a post on X marking World Statistics Day, the presidential candidate argued that Nigeria should use data to measure government performance and learn from countries that have recorded progress in development.
“The problem with our incompetent and corrupt APC-led government is the confusion of hubris with leadership,” Obi wrote.
He cited Bangladesh, saying the country lifted about 34 million people out of poverty between 2010 and 2022, while its extreme poverty rate fell from 12.2 per cent to 5.6 per cent.
Obi attributed the progress to policies focused on agriculture, export-oriented manufacturing, microfinance, social safety nets, human capital development and infrastructure.
He also listed Vietnam, Rwanda, Morocco and India as countries Nigeria could study for lessons in development.
Obi said Nigeria’s resources should translate into better living conditions, arguing that reliable statistics should guide policies and help measure their impact.
