If Jesse Watters has his way, you’ll never have to hear about Fox News’ The Five discussing the WNBA ever again.
Talk about a win-win.
During Wednesday’s episode of the daily talk show, the panel discussed the latest chapter in the eye-rolling saga between former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom and the WNBA. Kanter has previously made headlines for claiming he should be allowed to play in the league as part of an anti-transgender athlete publicity stunt, even getting into a verbal altercation with a player before being removed from the arena. Earlier on Wednesday, Kanter said he received a letter from the league stating he was ineligible to enter the draft and he would later get booted from the WNBA Finals after refusing a suite.
While others on The Five panel tried to generate interest in this story, Watters couldn’t muster it and ended up giving away the game in his frustration.
“Wake me up when someone throws a sex toy back on the court,” Watters said. “I hate the story. I hate the WNBA. I don’t watch it. No one watches it. They average under a million viewers during the regular season, and it’s boring. And the only time we talk about it is like, they fouled the white star too hard, or someone wore a T-shirt.”
Undeterred and confident he could fire up his fellow panelist, Greg Gutfeld brought up several Atlanta Dream players walking back to the locker room during the national anthem. Even then, Watters didn’t bite.
“OK, great,” Watters said. “No one saw it because no one’s watching. I don’t want to push this story anymore! I want to leave this story alone! I am no longer talking about the WNBA. As of now, I boycott this segment. I will just cede my time to anybody but Greg.”

This isn’t the first time Watters has admitted he has no interest in pushing the WNBA narratives that so many of his conservative media counterparts have made a meal out of in recent years. Amid the outrage following Sophie Cunningham’s comments that kickstarted the WNBA transgender debate in August, the Fox News commentator tried to tap out.
“This is week three of The Five covering the WNBA, and I have to say, I’m done,” Watters said. “I hate the WNBA. I don’t mind women’s basketball. My girls play basketball, but I don’t want to cover women’s basketball. I don’t want to be a WNBA analyst. We get paid to have an opinion about everything. And this is something I don’t care about.”
We appreciate Watters’ honesty in saying he doesn’t want to talk about the WNBA, and his tacit admission that what happens around the league isn’t something people like him really care about. However, he is wrong to say, “No one watches it.” Regular-season ratings hit a 26-year high, with many games drawing millions of viewers, and the WNBA Finals are also shattering records even without Caitlin Clark.
On second thought, don’t tell Watters any of that, because if he finds out people actually care about the WNBA, he might suddenly decide to talk about it again.
