The San Antonio Spurs’ new-look starting lineup got off to a sluggish start in its debut, but Victor Wembanyama is not losing any sleep over it.
San Antonio rolled out a three-guard starting group of De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper for the first time on Wednesday, pairing them with Devin Vassell and Wembanyama in a 123-103 preseason win over the Phoenix Suns at Frost Bank Center, their first win of the preseason.
The unit needed time to find its footing. San Antonio managed only three points in the first five minutes while shooting 1-of-10 from the field, and none of the three guards scored or recorded an assist in that stretch.

After the game, Wembanyama said the early struggles came down to a few missed opportunities rather than a flawed approach.
“I felt like we were trying to do the right things in the beginning, but we scored so few points. When we clicked, it really clicked,” the 2023 NBA top draft pick said. “When we play good defense, we get to run and we get good shots, and vice versa.”

“I feel like we missed some good shots, and after that you just need to get it going once or twice, and they call a timeout, and you get the momentum,” he added.
Once things settled down, the starters looked much more comfortable. Wembanyama led San Antonio with 19 points and four blocks, while Castle scored 18 points, going 14-of-15 at the free-throw line. Fox added nine points and four assists while knocking down both of his three-point attempts, and Harper chipped in nine points and six rebounds in 17 minutes.
When asked how confident he is that the lineup can work in the regular season, Wembanyama kept his answer short.
“Just as confident as last year. Nobody got worse,” he said.
There is good reason for that belief. The Spurs went 62-20 last season and made a run to the NBA Finals, knocking off the Oklahoma City Thunder in seven games in the Western Conference Finals before falling to the New York Knicks in five games.
With most of that core back, San Antonio is betting that putting its three best guards on the floor together will push it over the top this time around.
