US President Donald Trump says Greenland will play an “unparalleled” role in European and American security, while announcing plans for a major exploration drive targeting the island’s oil, natural gas and mineral resources.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said US military personnel stationed permanently in Greenland would help defend against future attacks on the United States.
“Any future attack on the United States would have to pass through Greenland, where our Defence would systematically shoot down drones, missiles or any other form of weapon that has not even been invented yet,” Trump wrote.
The US president also announced that a “massive exploration” programme for oil, natural gas and minerals was about to begin in what he called “our new and wonderful Greenland”.
Trump did not provide details of the proposed exploration plans. However, he claimed that experts believed Greenland held more easily accessible oil than almost any other territory in the world.
The announcement comes less than a month after the United States, Denmark and Greenland signed an agreement aimed at easing tensions following Trump’s repeated threats to bring the strategically located, mineral-rich island under US control.
The agreement expands the US military role in Greenland, paving the way for two new military bases and the deployment of the US Golden Dome missile defence system. It also reaffirms Danish sovereignty and Greenlanders’ right to self-determination.
