Bangladesh and the Netherlands have agreed to explore ways to boost trade and investment in shipbuilding, textiles, water management, semiconductors and agriculture, as the two countries seek to strengthen their economic partnership.
The issues were discussed at a meeting between Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Sjoerd Sjoerdsma and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka today (13 October).
Dutch Ambassador to Bangladesh Joris van Bommel also attended the meeting.
Both sides expressed interest in expanding economic cooperation following the formation of new governments in both countries in February 2026.
The Dutch minister highlighted plans for visits by trade delegations focusing on maritime industries, textiles and water management. He also expressed interest in strengthening ties over the next 50 years.
Bangladesh sought Dutch support for its request to extend its graduation from the least developed country (LDC) category and for progress in negotiations on a free trade agreement (FTA) between Bangladesh and the European Union (EU).
Kobir also highlighted opportunities for cooperation in shipbuilding and semiconductors, as well as continued support for Bangladesh's garment industry.
The two sides also discussed cooperation on water management, including canal excavation and delta management, as climate change increases the need for effective water management.
Kobir noted that the issue was a priority for the prime minister.
They also discussed the Rohingya crisis, stressing the importance of continued international engagement to find a lasting solution.
Other topics included migration, UN reform and cooperation at international forums. Kobir highlighted Bangladesh's role as president of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
