Town halls which form the Mancomunitat del Pla in Mallorca are spearheading a project to guarantee water supplies across the various municipalities. This 'mancomunitat' is a group of town halls in the Plain region which adopt common policies and share resources in respect of certain services.
The initiative involves interconnecting the municipal water supply networks of Sineu, Montuïri, Lloret de Vistalegre, Costitx and Algaida. The drafting of the project has been put out to tender and will be funded by the Council of Mallorca through a grant from its 2025 Water Pact.
The aim is to create a more secure and efficient supply system, improving the management of water resources and ensuring the availability of water. This is particularly important in light of potential water shortages while the region awaits the long-awaited connection to the main water supply network.
Central to the plan is the construction of a reservoir, which will act as a hub for distribution. The town halls have acquired a plot of land in Sineu; the regional government will undertake the development.
Joana Maria Pascual, president of the mancomunitat, says: "We have chosen to start with Sineu because that is where the reservoir - the starting point for the entire network - will be located." She adds that the region includes municipalities that have been most severely affected by drought or poor water quality. "By the time the government’s network arrives (expected by 2028), we will have completed projects ready to distribute the water to the municipalities that need it; in the meantime, we are making sure not to lose out on any grants that could help us move forward."
Fourteen municipalities are members of the mancomunitat, not all of which are in the same situation. Maria de la Salut, Ariany and Petra are already connected to the main water network.
